Is your school interested in free activities linked into to the Curriculum for Wales to coincide with Wales Nature Week? (29th June – 7th July).

Fly-tipping Action Wales are running a poster competition in partnership with Torfaen council, Keep Wales Tidy, & Hafod to cover a broad area of the Curriculum for Wales.

We are asking learners in Torfaen to help us design a poster that will promote the responsible disposal of waste material. This competition is aimed at inspiring Year 5 & 6 learners to engage with real world contemporary issues about what happens to our waste. The winning design will be made into a sign that the council and partners will use in your area.

  • The poster competition theme of ‘Littering and Fly-tipping Costs Torfaen!’ is to be used to encourage learners to create their poster image(s) and text. What do your learners understand about the environmental, social and economic costs of the environmental crime of littering and fly-tipping in the area? What ideas do they have that may encourage others to adopt more responsible behaviours around waste disposal?
     
  • A representative from Fly-tipping Action Wales, Keep Wales Tidy and Torfaen's Councillor Owen will judge to the top 3 entries from across all schools in Torfaen.
     
  • A £30 book voucher and certificate will be presented to the winning entry along with some of Keep Wales Tidy's giveaways. There will be a second and third winner, also presented with a certificate.
     
  • Partners will take photographs on the winning entry/learner (with permissions in place/approval from the school) and release an article to local media and across social media for use during Wales Nature Week.
     
  • Partners are open to holding a day of action in the winning school's local area in the run up to Wales Nature Week.  Your learners can enjoy being ethical citizens by taking part in an organised litter pick.  A separate event may be held for other volunteers. The plastic corex signs can be put up around the local area by partners.
     
  • Fly-tipping Action Wales will make a number of signs available free of charge to the winning school, and all partner organisations for use across Torfaen. Keep Wales Tidy can also support any interested schools in becoming an Eco School, or re-engaging with them through the Eco-Schools Programme.

Natural Resources Wales provide litter, fly-tipping and waste activities and games that will help you deliver against current curriculum and will enable learners to progress in the way described in the four purposes of the Curriculum for Wales.

Entry information

  • Pupils are able to enter in English or Welsh.  Wording should be a maximum of one sentence or various separate words
  • Entrants must be from individual pupils
  • Each school can enter as many entries as they like, one per pupil
  • Entries must be one page A3 paper
  • Entries must be sent to Torfaen offices (address below) by cop Wednesday 5th June
  • Work must be original and created by the pupils – please do not use any templates
  • The closing date for entries is close of play Wednesday 5th June

Judging of entries

Posters will be judged on creativity, how well they fit the theme and the impact we think it will have on passers by.  The content needs to be clear and communicated in an engaging way.

A winning entry will be chosen for each of the environmental, social and economic categories, with one overall winner receiving the £30 book voucher, certificates will be given to all three winning entries with the winning entry being presented with their book voucher and certificate from Councillor Owen.

Signs will either be created bilingually or separately in English and Welsh depending on the winning entry.
